In response to the escalating tension in the Middle East, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres,  has expressed anger over Iran’s airborne attack Saturday against Israel and urged a cessation of hostilities.

In a statement, the UN boss denounced the serious escalation represented by the large-scale attack launched on Israel by the Islamic Republic of Iran Saturday evening while calling for an immediate cessation of the hostilities.

Guterres said he is “deeply alarmed” about the “very real danger” of a devastating region-wide escalation.

He urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East.

The UN boss repeatedly stressed that neither the region nor the world can afford another war.

On Saturday, Iran launched an airborne attack against Israel in revenge for an April 1 raid on its diplomatic post in Damascus. The Israeli strike killed at least seven members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including two top generals.

Iran has accused Israel of carrying out the strike and promised to respond. Tel Aviv has not formally claimed responsibility for the incident, but it has been carrying out strikes against Iranian facilities in Syria for months.

Iran and Hezbollah, its biggest partner in Lebanon, have stated that the strike will not go unpunished.
