Nigeria Army to lay slain personnel to rest in delta state on Wednesday
The Nigerian Army has announced that it has concluded all arrangements to give some of its personnel, who were killed in Okuama Community, Delta State, a befitting burial in Abuja on Wednesday.
The 17 slain personnel, attached to 181 Amphibious Batallion, will be buried at the National Cemetery, Abuja, by 3:00 pm.
They were killed while on a peace mission to an embattled Okuama Community.
Daily Trust quoted Captain Audu Arigu, the army spokesman, saying that “The Burial Ceremony of Nigerian Army Personnel killed-in-action at Okuama Community, Delta State is scheduled for Wednesday, 27 March 2024 at National Cemetery, Abuja by 1500hrs (3:00pm).
“The President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces Federal Republic of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be the Special Guest of Honour at the event.”
Recall that the Nigerian Army, on Saturday, said that some of its personnel who went on a peace mission in the warring Okuama community were killed by the youth.
According to the statement by the Army acting director, Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, a commanding officer, two majors, one captain and other soldiers were killed.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has directed the army to arrest the murders of 16 soldiers who were killed while on a peace mission in the country’s south last week.
President Tinubu said, “The cowardly offenders responsible for this heinous crime will not go unpunished.”
He added that “The defence headquarters and chief of defence staff have been granted full authority to bring to justice anybody found to have been responsible for this unconscionable crime against the Nigerian people.”
