ATMIS pledges to enhance security in Somalia as fasting in Ramadan begins
The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) vowed to beef up security across the country during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which began worldwide on Monday.
African Union Special Representative for Somalia Mohamed El-Amine Souef called on the public to work with the Somalian security forces and ATMIS to ensure public safety.
He said Cooperation between the security forces and the public will be crucial in averting any disruptions of peace by al-Shabab and pledged ATMIS to ensure the safety and security of the Somalian people and their property within their areas of responsibility.
This week, the federal government of Somalia reported the death of several Alshabab members during a pre-planned operation conducted by the Somalian forces with international partners including the United States.
In the past, al-Shabab extremists usually stage attacks during Ramadan, mainly targeting urban centres, military bases and other public places such as hotels, markets and busy restaurants.
The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), is a multidimensional mission (military, police and civilian), authorised by the African Union and mandated by the United Nations Security Council – AU Peace and Security Council Communique for 1068th Meeting and UN Security Council Resolution 2628 (2022).
It replaces the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) with a clear mandate to fully implement the Somali Transition Plan (STP). ATMIS became operational on 1 April 2022.
