Nigeria’s Super Eagles have recorded their first maximum three points at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations ( AFCON) as they defeated host nation Côte d’Ivoire at the Alassane Ouattara Olympic Stadium on Thursday.

The only goal of the match was scored through William Troost-Ekong’s second-half penalty after Victor Osimhen was fouled inside the 18-yard box.

The goal was all that the Nigerians needed to run away with the maximum points.

Nigeria failed to bury the game in the early minutes but Osimhen, who came face to face with the goalkeeper, failed to convert a through pass from the midfield by Ademola Lookman.

With the win against the hosts, Nigeria now moved second in Group A with four points, the same as Equatorial Guinea.

Equatorial Guinea are leading Nigeria due to superior goal difference.

Hosts Côte d’Ivoire are third with three points while Guinea-Bissau occupy the bottom of the log with zero point after losing their first two matches of the tournament.
