Kano: NNPP topples APC as Supreme Court upholds Governor Abba Yusuf’s election

Yusuf Abba Kabiru of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) will continue his administration as the duly elected governor of Kano State after his election was upheld by the Supreme Court in Abuja.

The petition filed against Yusuf by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its governorship candidate, Nasir Yusuf Gawuna, was dismissed by the highest court.

The Supreme Court on Friday reversed the judgments of the Court of Appeal and the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which nullified the election of the governor.

Justice John Inyang Okoro, who delivered the lead judgment, ruled that the law and natural justice were turned upside down by the two lower courts to arrive at the undeserved and unfair decision.

Justice Okoro added that the two lower courts were wrong to have deducted 165,616 votes from the score of the NNPC.

The apex court disregarded the accusation that the voting papers were not signed and stamped at the back.

In his rulings, Justice Okoro also clarified that there was no evidence from any witness or documents to show that the ballot papers were illegal and unlawful, as erroneously concluded by the Court of Appeal.

The latest ruling, which is final in this case, means the Kano State Governor would continue his tenure as stipulated by the Nigerian Constitution.
