Wole Soyinka speaks on president Tinubu’s performance
One of Nigeria’s most celebrated intellectual icons and elder statesman Prof Wole Soyinka says the time is not yet ripe to rate the performance of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He explained that he is giving the new administration a whole year to prove themselves to Nigerians before he can rate how far the ex-Lagos State governor has performed as the president of the West African country.
Soyinka, a Nobel Laureate, said this on Sunday when he paid a courtesy visit to Tinubu, who is currently in Lagos for the festive season.
He said, “Well, you know, something you may have noticed about me is that most heads of state, when they take office, I always leave them alone for about the first year…Because they need time.
“I know when they come in, they don’t start from ground zero. They often start even lower than ground zero and they have to make up.
“So, I’m adopting the same principle this time. When you see me next year, ask the same question again and listen to my answer,” he said.
