Islamophobia: Mosque in western France receives screaming threat letter
Local media report in France says a mosque in western city of Nantes received a threat letter targeting the country’s Muslim community.
The group behind the letter threatened to attack Muslim learning centres, mosques, businesses and communities.
Cerfia news reported that the letter, signed by a group called the Friends of Charles Martel, a major Frankish historical military and political leader in the 8th century, read: “We will randomly burn your Koranic schools, your mosques, your businesses, your neighborhoods, your cities, and we will chase you out of France.”
Muslims in France have been facing tough times as cases of Islamophobia grow in the European country.
French Muslims are until now being tormented by the fallout from the government’s declaration of a state of emergency following the November 2015 terror attacks that killed 130 people.
“The fear and the trauma actually that we experienced in 2015 is still part of our psychology,” said Rayan Freschi, a French jurist and researcher at the British advocacy group, CAGE.
Anadolu reports that European Islamophobia Report 2022 co-editor Enes Bayrakli named France as one of the most Islamophobic countries last year.
Experts have said the anti-separatism law introduced by the government in 2021 “systemically obstructs” religious freedom and Islamic practices.
