Somalia Army kills top Al-Shabaab leaders, destroys administrative offices in special operation

Abdillahi Ali Anod, the spokesperson of Somalia’s Ministry of Defense, announced that the national army has conducted several successful special military operations against the Al-Shabaab insurgents in the Bulo-Fulay, Bay region as the federal government continues its campaigns against raging insecurity in the country.

He explained that officers of the Somali army eliminated dozens of Al-Shabaab fighters, including some key leaders of the armed insurgents in a special operation.

The army also brought down the administrative offices of the insurgents, which is their extortion checkpoint, and a garage used by the group as an explosive arms depot.

Anod stressed further that the Somalia National Army conducted an operation against Al-Shabaab in a large area under Run-nirgod Middle Shabelle to maintain security in the area.

The Somali government had declared the commencement of the second phase of anti-Al-Shabaab campaigns as part of moves to stabilise the country.

The spokesman called on civilians to stay away from the insurgents’ hideout positions targeted by the military to avoid getting caught in the crossfire.

In January, a US air strike assisting government troops in the country killed about 30 Al-Shabaab militants.

The operation took place near the town of Galcad, about 260km (162 miles) northeast of the capital Mogadishu.
