Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar Resigns
Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health reasons.
His resignation was conveyed in a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The President has accepted the minister’s decision and expressed gratitude for his service to the nation, according to a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
The Presidency is expected to notify the Senate of a successor later this week.
Badaru, 63, served two terms as governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before being appointed Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.
His resignation comes at a sensitive time, following President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency. Further details on the scope and implementation of the emergency measures are expected in the coming days.
