President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, describing it as a “grave offence” against international law and humanitarian solidarity.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Ramaphosa called for the immediate release of South Africans and other nationals detained during the aid mission to Gaza. Among those held is Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mandla Mandela.

“The interception of the flotilla in international waters is contrary to international law and violates the sovereignty of every nation whose flag was flown on the dozens of vessels,” Ramaphosa said.

He emphasized that the flotilla’s purpose was strictly humanitarian — to deliver relief to Gaza’s residents — and not an act of provocation. Citing a ruling by the International Court of Justice, the President stressed that humanitarian aid must be allowed to reach its destination without obstruction.

South Africa also endorsed calls by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for an urgent end to the blockade on Gaza.

“My thoughts are with all of the abductees and their families,” Ramaphosa added. “It is my expectation that Israel will release the human rights activists, as these abductions serve no purpose in the broader pursuit of peace in the Middle East.”
