Minor Explosion at Ilese Barracks Quickly Contained — No Casualties Reported

The Nigerian Army has confirmed a minor explosion and fire outbreak at Ilese Barracks, Ijebu-Ode, on Thursday, August 14, 2025.

According to a statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, the incident occurred in the early hours of the day within one of the storage buildings of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron.

She explained that the localized explosion triggered a limited fire, which was swiftly brought under control through the combined efforts of troops from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment and the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service.

“Importantly, no lives were lost, and no injuries were sustained. The structural damage was confined to the affected building and some stored materials,” Anele stated.

The Army noted that a detailed assessment is underway to determine the extent of material loss. Residents of Ilese and surrounding communities were urged to remain calm and continue with their daily activities, as the Nigerian Army, alongside relevant agencies, has launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion and to prevent future occurrences.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all its personnel as well as the members of neighbouring communities,” Anele added.
