A suspected notorious assassin, Wasiu Akinwande, popularly known as Olori Esho, has been arraigned before the Ogba Magistrate Court in Lagos on 11-count charges ranging from murder, unlawful possession of firearms, attempted murder, to grievous bodily harm.

The 44-year-old suspect, described by police as the most wanted vicious hired killer in Lagos, was arrested by the Lagos State Police Command during a covert tactical operation codenamed “Silence, Speed and Surprise”. The operation, led by the Command’s Tactical Squad, successfully tracked and apprehended Akinwande in his hideout located in Agbado, Ogun State.

Confirming the development on Tuesday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated:

“Wasiu Akinwande, aka Olori Esho, is currently being arraigned at the Ogba Magistrate Court on an eleven-count charge.”

According to police records, Akinwande had evaded capture for several years while allegedly leading a violent gang responsible for terrorising Mushin and surrounding areas. The police recovered a large cache of arms from his residence, including AK-47 rifles, K2 rifles, locally made pistols, live ammunition, walkie-talkies, and a poisonous dagger. Akinwande reportedly admitted to using these weapons for killings in collaboration with his gang.

Gruesome Charges

The charges against Akinwande span a period of over a decade, including:

The murder of Bankole Yusuf and Ramadan Yusuf on July 31, 2024, during a violent gang clash in Mushin.

The killing of 10-year-old Aminat Lateef on December 9, 2010, in Fadeyi, Lagos, while the girl was running an errand.

The murder of five unknown persons, including individuals identified as Ayinla and Ojaja, during a clash between rival factions, allegedly involving the use of AK-47 rifles.

The attempted murder of 58-year-old Awawu Ajalara on February 17, 2011, by shooting both of her legs with an AK-47, which led to permanent disability.

Weapons Recovered

Among the items retrieved from his Mushin base were:

One K2 assault rifle (Breach No. AR72739)

Two AK-47 rifles (Breach Nos. 0275 & 5688)

Two locally made single-barrel pistols

70 rounds of 5.56mm live ammunition

27 rounds of 9mm live ammunition

57 cartridges

Three walkie-talkies

One poisonous dagger

The police say Akinwande could not give any satisfactory account of how he came into possession of the arms and ammunition, violating the Firearms Act of the Federation.

Next Steps

The court proceedings continue as the suspect faces trial under the Lagos State Criminal Law (2015) and the Firearms Act (as amended). The police have assured the public of their commitment to rooting out violent criminal elements threatening peace and safety in the state.

Further investigations are ongoing to apprehend accomplices who are currently at large.
