Video: Peter Okoye clears air on hit song Winning
Afrobeats star Peter Okoye, also known as Mr. P and one-half of the renowned Nigerian music duo P-Square, has addressed the ongoing debate surrounding his latest single Winning, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in his creative process.
In response to claims that he claimed undue credit for the track’s production, Peter clarified his dedication to honoring all contributors, stating, “I have always believed in teamwork and giving people their due credit; it’s the essence of my creative process.”
P-Square, celebrated for iconic hits like Do Me and No One Like You, gained popularity in the 2000s and continues to impact African music. Despite past disagreements leading to a split, Peter and his twin brother Paul reunited in 2021, rekindling excitement among fans.
Peter’s recent work on Winning involved notable collaborations with Ghanaian producer Vampire and songwriter Calypso, both instrumental in crafting the song’s unique style. He recounted his initial connection with Vampire in mid-2022, inviting him to Lagos to contribute to several P-Square projects, including Winning. Peter worked closely with co-producer Goldswarm on the track’s chord progression, while Calypso composed the song’s foundation and vocal samples, which became integral to the chorus.
Peter shared that Paul expressed interest in adding his own verse to Winning, even though it was originally Peter’s solo submission for their upcoming album. Although recent creative tensions have been challenging, Peter reaffirmed his commitment to releasing music with a positive outlook.
“All I want to do is release my music, conduct my business, and live my life in peace. Enough of the negativity—let’s keep Winning together,” he said, encouraging fans to support the single across streaming platforms.
