Police announce new death toll as more people confirmed killed in Jigawa tanker explosion

No fewer than 105 people have now been confirmed dead in the devastating tanker explosion in Jigawa State, northern Nigeria.

A statement by the spokesman of the Jigawa State Command, DSP. Lawan Shiisu Adam, said the explosion was triggered by petrol that leaked from the tanker into a gutter.

He added that villagers attempted to scoop petrol from the drainage, leading to the fire that engulfed the area.
“Unfortunately, villagers attempted to scoop petrol from the drainage, resulting in a flame that engulfed the area and many people were reportedly perished.”

The police spokesman stressed that 105 burnt bodies have been retrieved , while 70 injured persons were rushed to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals for medical treatment.

The Nigerian Medical Association has also appealed to doctors to rush to nearby emergency rooms to help with the influx of patients
