Key al-Shabaab leaders surrender to Somalia National Army
Four Al-Shabab leaders who defected from the group surrendered to the Somalia National Army stationed in the Bulo-Haji area of the Lower Jubba region. However, the group has neither accepted nor denied this claim raised by the government.
The Somalia National News Agency reported that the four leaders who surrendered were the Emir of Bulo Haji village, the head of the group’s finance in the area, the head of intelligence, and the leader of the so-called tax collector.
Earlier this month, Somalian army forces, backed by local clan militias, recaptured Bulo Haji, a strategic area located approximately 80 kilometres south of Kismayo, the capital of the Lower Jubba region.
The Somalia government recently reported that approximately one hundred al-Shabaab members have surrendered across the South-Central states of Galmudug, Southwest, HirShabelle, and Jubaland.
The government’s efforts to combat al-Shabaab have been bolstered by the support of the international community in recent times.
