Political gridlock ends as DR Congo appoints new government
President Felix Tshisekedi of DR Congo has formed a new government, putting an end to the political chaos that marred the newly elected administration.
This was disclosed by government spokesperson Tina Salama in the early hours of Wednesday.
In an announcement on state broadcaster RTNC, Salama said Guy Kabombo Muadiamvita had been appointed defence minister to oversee the raging insecurity facing the nation.
Doudou Fwamba Likunde was named finance minister, and Kizito Pakabomba was appointed to oversee the mines ministry, among other appointments.
President Felix Tshisekedi returned to office for a second term after elections in late 2023 that also gave his Sacred Union coalition a large majority in parliament.
However, internal struggle for positions has dragged the formation of a new cabinet of ministers to work with Mr. Tshisekedi.
The president has now presented a cabinet comprising 54 ministers, compared to 57 in the last government.
The reduced number of members highlighted the growing call to cut the cost of governance.
Tshisekedi formed his first government when he was elected in 2019.
Following the last election in December, the Sacred Union has held almost 95% of National Assembly seats, strengthening its dominance over other political parties.
