Kenya floods: More people confirmed killed after heavy rains
Casualties in Kenya from floods caused by heavy rains have risen to 76, says country’s government spokesperson.
“Since the onset of these rains, beginning 1 March 2024, we deeply regret to announce the tragic loss of an additional 6 lives in the last 12 hours bringing the total to 76,” Isaac Mwaura said at a news conference.
He added that 29 Kenyans have been wounded and 19 persons have been reported missing.
He explained that the troops and police had been sent in to help and support the impacted communities.
Kenya has had an unrelenting rainy season that runs from March to May (MAM), complete with strong storms and precipitation that is above average.
All 47 counties have been negatively impacted by the current floods, which have resulted in many displaced people, damaged infrastructure, and the tragic loss of lives.
The Kenya Meteorological Department on Saturday issued warnings, appealing to the public to prepare for even heavier rainfall in several regions, notably in the Rift Valley, highlands West, and East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Southeast Lowlands, Lake Victoria Basin, and the coastal region.
