UN expresses deep worries as tensions between Israel and Iran intensify

The United Nations has expressed deep concerns over the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.

Spokesperson to the UN Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric said at a news conference that the UN boss is following the situation very closely.

He stressed that the UN is very worried about a potential escalation in a situation that seems to be escalating on a daily basis.

Dujarric added that the UN does not have any “inside information on any potential military activities by any of the parties in the region.

On behalf of the UN, Dujarric called on the parties “to avoid any escalation and to work towards de-escalation of the tensions.”

Recall that Israel’s foreign minister threatened Wednesday that Tel Aviv would strike Iran directly if Tehran launched an attack from its territory against Israel.

His charging remarks came in the wake of surging tensions between the regional foes following the killings of Iranian generals in a bombing at the Iranian consulate in Syria earlier this month.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has vowed retaliation against Israel over the attack on its Damascus consulate.

Tehran holds Israel responsible for the strike that destroyed the building and killed 12 people.

Israel has not admitted its role, but it has been waiting for an Iranian retaliation to the attack, which marks a dramatic escalation in their long-running shadow war.
