African Union Chairperson extends condolences to Mozambique over devastating boat disaster
In a heartfelt message on his personal X formally known as Twitter, Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, has expressed his deepest condolences to the Government and the People of Mozambique in the wake of the devastating ferry accident off the coast of Nampula province.
Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat conveyed his sympathies to those affected by the tragedy, which claimed the lives of over 90 individuals.
He acknowledged the profound loss suffered by the Mozambican community and extended prayers to the bereaved families during this challenging period.
The chairperson emphasized the African Union’s solidarity with Mozambique, standing in unity with the nation as it mourns the loss of lives and endeavors to support those impacted by the incident.
More than 90 people tragically lost their lives after a ferry sank off the north coast of Mozambique, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred as the vessel was traveling from Lunga to Mozambique Island, off the coast of Nampula province.
The ferry, carrying an estimated 130 passengers, reportedly sank amid panic sparked by disinformation about a cholera outbreak.
Nampula Secretary of State Jaime Neto revealed that only 12 survivors have been accounted for so far, highlighting the severity of the tragedy.
