Senegal: African Union congratulates Faye as Macron holds talks with president-elect

The African Union Commission President, Moussa Faki Mahamat has congratulated Senegal’s president-elect, Bassirou Diomaye Faye while wishing him “full success in his weighty and noble charge”.

The AU head commended the people of Senegal for the peaceful outcome of the election, saying this dignified and responsible behaviour of all political and social actors attests to the deep roots of democratic traditions in African democracy.

The President of the Commission assures President Diomaye Faye of the full solidarity of the African Union with the great Senegalese people.

He wishes the president-elect every success in his heavy and noble task of deepening a peaceful, stable and tolerant democracy in the service of inclusive, shared prosperity.

Meanwhile, President Emmanuel Macron of France has spoken to the newly elected Senegal’s anti-establishment president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, following his emergence from the Sunday presidential election.

According to a statement from his office, Mr Macron said France wanted to “continue and intensify the partnership” between their countries.

Macron offered Faye “warm congratulations” for his victory in last Sunday’s presidential race, commending the smooth unfolding of the vote and “the sovereign choice of the Senegalese people.”

The Elysée Palace added that Macron and Faye held talks in the main areas of “bilateral cooperation and the regional situation” in their first telephone conversation.
