US Assistant Secretary commends Ethiopia’s progress in implementing peace agreements
In a recent meeting between the US Assistant Secretary of State Department’s Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations and Ethiopian officials, significant strides in Ethiopia‘s peace efforts were acknowledged and applauded.
During the meeting, which took place at the office of State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mesganu Arga, in-depth discussions were held on various bilateral issues and matters of mutual concern.
The US Assistant Secretary of State, Anne A. Witkowksy, emphasized the longstanding bilateral relations between the two countries and underscored the importance of enhancing economic cooperation through comprehensive bilateral engagements.
One of the focal points of the discussion was the implementation of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (COHA) and the Transitional Justice process in Ethiopia.
Both officials shared perspectives on these matters, highlighting the progress made by the Federal Government of Ethiopia, particularly in terms of implementing the COHA signed between the Ethiopian federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) on November 2nd, 2022, in Pretoria, South Africa.
Ambassador Misganu reiterated the commitment of the Ethiopian government to prioritize peaceful dialogues at various levels, emphasizing the importance of fostering peace and stability in the region.
Assistant Secretary Anne Witkowksy commended Ethiopia’s significant achievements in implementing the COHA and advancing the Transitional Justice process. She expressed the United States government’s dedication to supporting Ethiopia’s efforts in the Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) process.
Additionally, she reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to providing technical and diplomatic assistance to help Ethiopia achieve a lasting peaceful resolution to conflicts.
The meeting concluded with both parties expressing their mutual commitment to further cooperation and collaboration in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in Ethiopia and the wider region.
