Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) apprehended Kayode Cole on Monday, March 18, 2024, for issuing a death threat against the Commission’s Executive Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.

The arrest took place in the Lugbe area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The threat surfaced on social media platform Instagram, under the handle “1billionsecretss”, in response to a post by popular blogger Instablog9ja on February 1, 2024. Instablog9ja’s post, titled “A Religious Sect Is Laundering Money for Terrorists: EFCC Chairman Traces N7 Billion Fraud Proceeds,” drew attention to the EFCC’s investigations into financial crimes linked to religious organizations.

Cole’s comment on the post read, “He will be dead in six months. This man will be dead in 6 months remembered, I said it,” raising concerns about the safety of EFCC Chairman Olukoyede.

During interrogation, Cole confessed that his motive was merely to gain attention, describing his action as “chasing clout.” However, authorities have indicated that he will face further investigation and potential prosecution for his threatening remarks.

The incident follows revelations made by Chairman Olukoyede on January 30, 2024, during a dialogue on “Youth, Religion, and the Fight against Corruption” at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja.

Olukoyede disclosed the EFCC’s findings regarding money laundering activities within certain religious groups, highlighting the Commission’s efforts to combat financial crimes across Nigeria.
