Breaking: Senegal’s Constitutional Council affirms Feb. 25 election schedule after initial postponement
In a shocking ruling, the Constitutional Council of Senegal has invalidated the law that postponed the presidential election scheduled for February 25, 2024.
Recall that President Mackey announced the decision to delay the February 25 election, citing the need to resolve a dispute over the eligibility of presidential candidates.
The decision, as approved by the Senegalese MPs, triggered widespread protests in the West African country, leading to the deaths of three people, with several others reported injured.
Opposition parties described the election delay as a “constitutional coup.”
While ruling on the controversial election delay that has thrown the country into political chaos, the Constitutional Council emphasized that the sudden change of the election schedule was contrary to the country’s Constitution.
The decision by the court has significant implications for the ongoing electoral process.
Before the ruling, the international community, including the regional ECOWAS bloc, had called for urgent steps to be taken to restore the electoral calendar as provided by the constitution.
