In a decisive move to protect the integrity of its officers and maintain public trust, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a stern warning against the spread of fake news and cyberbullying.

The force expressed deep concern over the malicious circulation of old content and misinformation, which is aimed at discrediting the diligent efforts of its officers in maintaining law and order.

The NPF strongly condemns these actions, viewing them as a direct assault on the stability and safety of society. Such activities, criminalized by the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act, 2015, and other criminal laws, not only tarnish the reputation of the force but also have the potential to incite fear and discord within the country.

In response to this growing threat, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has ordered the NPF National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) to intensify efforts in clamping down on individuals and groups responsible for spreading fake news and engaging in cyberbullying.

The IGP emphasized that “Those found guilty of such offenses will face the full force of the law, and the police will collaborate closely with relevant authorities to ensure swift and appropriate legal action against offenders.”

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, urged citizens to exercise caution and discernment when consuming and sharing information online.

Emphasizing the collective responsibility to uphold truth and integrity, he called for unity against the spread of misinformation and cyberbullying, recognizing that the safety and well-being of the country depend on such collective efforts.

The NPF encourages the public to report any instances of fake news or cyberbullying promptly.

The force reassures citizens that it is committed to investigating and taking necessary action against those involved in such activities, reinforcing the importance of a collaborative approach to combating the detrimental effects of misinformation and cyberbullying on national security and stability.
