South African minister exposes Israeli intelligence’s intimidation tactics
South Africa’s Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor has alleged that Israeli intelligence attempted to intimidate her in light of the Gaza case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Ms. Pandor expressed concerns about the safety of her family after facing targeting on social media. She disclosed to the Mail & Guardian news website on Thursday that she had received threatening messages and had discussed enhancing her security with Police Minister Bheki Cele.
“The Israeli agents, the intelligence services, [this] is how they behave, and they seek to intimidate you, so we must not be intimidated. There is a cause that is under way,” she was quoted as saying.
Israel is yet to comment on the allegation.
South dragged Israel to the ICJ over the war in Gaza alleging human rights violations by Tel Aviv.
The ICJ, in its ruling, directed Israel to take steps to prevent genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and give a report within a month.
President Cyril Ramaphosa had earlier suggested a possible fightback campaign against South Africa after the ICJ ruling.
South Africa has long been a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause, and the ruling ANC likened it to their struggle against apartheid, where a white minority rule over a black majority.
The President Cyril Ramaphosa-led government also announced the withdrawal of its diplomats from Israel, stressing that the position of Israel’s ambassador to Pretoria was becoming “untenable”.
