The US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield has commended Liberia over its recently concluded peaceful transfer of power while rating the West African country as a credible example for democracy in the whole of Africa.

Speaking with journalists in New York after her recent visit to Liberia, she explained that the decision of former President George Weah to concede defeat without jeopardising the peace of a nation that is still recovering from post-civil war pains “is truly an example for not just West Africa, but the entire continent of Africa.”

“We really should commend Liberians for that success,” she said.

The US envoy promised to work closely with the new administration led by former vice president, Joseph Boakai at the United Nations and ensure that the government of the West African country works.

“Liberia has been very supportive and worked closely with us here at the UN, and we’re committed to helping President Boakai succeed,” she said.

“We have been a close ally and partner to Liberia throughout.”

Recall that Mr Boakai displaced incumbent leader George Weah in the last year’s election and conceded defeat when it became clear that he had lost the poll.

He also earned praises from the international community for relinquishing power peacefully in the region that has been riddled with military takeovers.
