Russian troops may be deployed to Burkina Faso soon – Captain Ibrahim Traore
Burkina Faso military government led by Captain Ibrahim Traore has disclosed that Russian troops could be deployed to the West African nation to help in the fight against extremist insurgencies in the West African nation.
Captain Ibrahim Traore said in an interview that the Russian leadership is offering to support the country with logistical and tactical training.
He added that Moscow also pledged to sell any type of weapon needed to crush the raging insecurity in the Sahel nation.
The young head of the military regime also clarified that there were no restrictions on the volume of weapons that could be purchased from Russia, China, Turkey, or Iran, unlike other countries.
Reports recently surfaced that about 100 Russian fighters were sent to the African country last week as military instructors.
Burkina Faso, like other countries under military dictatorship in Africa, has strengthened ties with Russia and deserted its former colonial power, France.
Recall that Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger recently announced their immediate withdrawal from the regional ECOWAS bloc.
The three countries have been facing security challenges and have faulted the bloc for failing to assist them in tackling their common enemies.
