President Cyril Ramaphosa celebrates South Africa’s AFCON win against Morocco
President Cyril Ramaphosa has praised the Bafana Bafana of South Africa following their shocking win over Morocco in the ongoing TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations.
South Africa produced one of the major upsets as the team knocked out Morocco with a 2-0 win in the round of 16.
The Atlas Lions of Morocco were the favourite to scale through following their brilliant outings at the FIFA World Cups in Qatar.
Morocco conquered Spain, Portugal before their progress was halted by France.
Going into the match, it was anticipated that the Atlas Lions would replicate their World Cup form and overpowered the South Africans.
Evidence Makgopa and Teboho Mokoena scored the two goals to give South Africa the needed push to fly into the next round.
While reacting to their brilliant performance, President Cyril Ramaphosa lauded the South African lads for making the country proud.
“Well done to Hugo Broos and Bafana Bafana on advancing to the #AFCON2023 quarterfinals with your victory over the continent’s leading side, Morocco.
“No pressure – but we know you have it in you to make us proud again.”
South Africa will now face Cape Verde in the quarterfinals of the delayed 2023 AFCON.
In other interesting encounters, Nigeria will face Angola while hosts, Côte d’Ivoire will entertain Mali. Congo versus Mali is the last encounter of the stage.
