The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a warning calling for immediate action to address the escalating health and humanitarian crises unfolding in Sudan. The organization urged the international community to step up and provide crucial financial aid to tackle the worsening situation.

The Director-General of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressed deep concern over the state of health facilities in regions affected by the ongoing conflict in Sudan, saying that the majority of the facilities have ceased operations due to the relentless fighting that has persisted since April 15, 2023.

Tedros emphasized that Urgent action is required to reverse Sudan’s worsening conflict amid the deepening humanitarian and health crises, with the fresh displacement of hundreds of thousands of people, mainly women and children.

According to him, there is a need for increased financial support from the international community to address the pressing health and humanitarian needs in the region.

He highlighted the urgent need to boost the provision of basic health services for the most vulnerable in the affected states, where at least 70 per cent of health facilities are not operational due to the ongoing conflict.

The WHO’s plea underscores the critical situation in Sudan and emphasizes the necessity for swift and coordinated efforts to alleviate the suffering of the affected populations.
