President Tinubu advocates bold climate action, international collaboration at COP28 in Dubai
President Bola Tinubu is set to make a significant impact on the global stage as he departs Abuja on Wednesday for Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to participate in the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference, popularly known as COP28.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity on Tuesday November 28, 2023.
The event, themed “Unite, Act, and Deliver,” will host world leaders at the World Leaders’ Summit on December 1 and 2, 2023.
According to the statement, during the summit, President Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a national statement articulating Nigeria’s stance on crucial issues, with a particular emphasis on renewable energy and climate financing.
Mindful of the profound impact of climate change on Nigeria, including desertification, flooding, erosion, drought, and associated national security risks, the President aims to leverage this platform to advocate for increased financial and technical support for developing nations.
President Tinubu is poised to remind developed countries of their commitment to providing $100 billion annually to support localized initiatives addressing climate change-related challenges.
“His message will also underscore Nigeria’s dedication to holding businesses and institutions accountable, emphasizing sustainable and responsible practices,” the statement reads.
The Nigerian delegation accompanying President Tinubu to COP28 will actively pursue the establishment of new and deeper bilateral partnerships.
The focus will be on implementing Nigeria’s Energy Transition, Article 6 Projects, Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), Technology Transfer, Capacity Building, and Methane Mitigation.
While in Dubai, President Tinubu will play an active role in key sideline events, aligning with his commitment to aggressively attract foreign direct investment for enhanced wealth creation and revenue expansion in Nigeria.
The president’s participation in these events, along with those hosted by the Nigerian delegation, is expected to contribute significantly to advancing the nation’s sustainable development goals.
Accompanied by senior government officials, President Tinubu is anticipated to return to Abuja following the conclusion of the summit, leaving a lasting impact on the global climate action discourse.
