China Warns Against Interference in Nigeria’s Affairs After US Threat of Military Action
The Chinese government has cautioned against any foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs following comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump threatening military action over alleged persecution of Christians.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed Beijing’s support for the administration of President Bola Tinubu, describing Nigeria as a “comprehensive strategic partner.”
“China firmly supports the Nigerian government as it leads its people on the development path suited to its national conditions,” Ning stated. “We firmly oppose any country using religion or human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, or to threaten them with sanctions or force.”
The remarks underscore China’s stance on respecting national sovereignty and non-interference — a key pillar of its foreign policy — as tensions rise over Washington’s reported warning to Abuja.
