Surgeons in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, have successfully removed 29 steel spoons, 19 toothbrushes, and two pens from the stomach of a man in what doctors have described as one of the most unusual medical cases in recent times.

According to a Times of India report on September 26, the patient, a resident of Bulandshahr, was admitted to a de-addiction centre in Ghaziabad a month earlier. He was rushed to hospital after complaining of severe abdominal pain.

An ultrasound scan revealed multiple metallic objects inside his stomach, prompting an emergency operation led by Dr. Shyam Kumar.

“The surgery was as complex as it was rare. The team had to carefully remove the items one by one to prevent injury to vital organs,” Dr. Kumar said, describing the discovery as “shocking” because of the sheer number of foreign objects.

Despite the risks, the operation was successful, and the patient has since been discharged. He is now stable and recovering.

Hospital officials said the man later admitted he swallowed the objects in frustration while at the de-addiction centre, claiming he felt mistreated and deprived of food.

Medical experts noted that similar incidents have been reported before. In 2022, doctors in Muzaffarnagar removed 63 spoons from another patient’s stomach, while in 2019, surgeons in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi retrieved spoons, screwdrivers, toothbrushes, a kitchen knife, and even a door latch from a man suffering from a major mental disorder.
