Nigeria’s flag is flying high on the global sporting stage after Lagos State swimmer, Abduljabar Adama, won a historic silver medal at the ongoing World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships in Otopeni, Romania.

Adama clinched the medal in the fiercely contested Men’s 50-metre Butterfly event, clocking an impressive 23.64 seconds to finish second — a feat never before achieved by a Nigerian swimmer in the history of the championship.

The victory marks Nigeria’s best-ever performance in world swimming, positioning the country on the international aquatics map.

Adama, who earlier this year won a gold medal at the Africa Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships in Cairo, Egypt, has continued to demonstrate consistency and resilience, building momentum as one of the most promising talents in African swimming.

His journey to international recognition began with grassroots exposure in Lagos, where he first represented the state at the National Youth Games in Ilorin, Kwara State, a platform dedicated to nurturing under-15 athletes.

Reacting to the milestone, the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu, described Adama’s triumph as a product of Lagos’ sustained investment in grassroots sports development.

“Adama’s success story is a testament to the Lagos State Government’s developmental programme, which is deeply rooted in nurturing and grooming young talents. This is the type of outcome that reinforces our belief in grassroots sports as the foundation of a greater Lagos rising,” Fatodu said.

Adama’s silver medal not only brings glory to Lagos and Nigeria but also inspires a new generation of young swimmers and athletes across the country to believe in the power of grassroots sports development.
