Super Eagles Legend Peter Rufai Dies at 61

The Nigerian football community and global sports fans are mourning the death of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai, who reportedly passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at the age of 61 after a prolonged illness.
Fondly known as “Dodomayana,” Rufai was celebrated as one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers. Born on August 24, 1963, in Lagos, he began his career with local club Stationery Stores before moving to Europe in 1986. His club career spanned multiple countries, with stints at Lokeren and Beveren in Belgium, Go Ahead Eagles in the Netherlands, Farense in Portugal, and the renowned Deportivo La Coruña in Spain.
Rufai earned 65 caps for Nigeria and was a cornerstone of the Super Eagles’ golden era. He played a critical role in Nigeria’s victorious 1994 Africa Cup of Nations campaign and also featured in two FIFA World Cups—1994 and 1998—earning respect for his agility, composure, and leadership on the field.
His influence extended far beyond his performances. He inspired a generation of Nigerian goalkeepers, with Vincent Enyeama once describing him as a role model.
