Tinubu Hails Mayoral Wins of British-Nigerians Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson in London

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to two British-Nigerians, Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson, following their historic elections as Mayors of Barking and Dagenham, and Islington, respectively.
In a statement issued by Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga on Wednesday, Tinubu praised the duo for embodying values of honesty, integrity, and selfless service—qualities that he said reflect the best of Nigerian heritage and diasporic excellence.
At just 29, Opeyemi Bright has become the youngest-ever Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, marking a remarkable rise in public service since her election as the borough’s youngest Labour councillor in 2018 at age 22. Jason Jackson, on the other hand, has etched his name in history as the first Nigerian-born Mayor of Islington since the borough’s establishment in 1900. He joined local government in 2022 and quickly rose to chair the borough’s Homes and Communities Committee by 2023.
President Tinubu commended their dedication and success, describing them as role models for young people across the world. “Their stories will inspire countless young people—both at home and in the diaspora—to pursue excellence and serve their communities with distinction,” he said.
He concluded by expressing confidence in their leadership: “On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I extend heartfelt congratulations to Mayors Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson. I urge you to continue giving your best in your new roles… I look forward to the positive impact you will make in your respective boroughs.”
