Arsenal’s Merino rescues Spain with stoppage-time equaliser against Netherlands
Mikel Merino maintained his impressive goalscoring run for Arsenal and his home country by striking a crucial stoppage-time equaliser in Spain’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in the first leg of their Nations League quarter-final in Rotterdam.
Spain took an early lead in the ninth minute through Arsenal-linked winger Nico Williams, but the Dutch responded with goals from Cody Gakpo and Tijjani Reijnders to seize control of the match.
With just eight minutes remaining, the Netherlands were reduced to 10 men when Jorrel Hato received a red card for a high challenge, shifting momentum in Spain’s favour.
The visitors capitalized on the numerical advantage, with Merino netting from close range in stoppage time to secure a vital draw.
