Indonesia has officially been welcomed into BRICS, the coalition of major emerging economies that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

The announcement, made by Brazil on Monday, marks a significant expansion of the bloc.

In a statement on Tuesday, Indonesia’s foreign ministry highlighted the strategic importance of this membership, describing it as a step toward enhancing collaboration and partnerships with other developing nations.

As the world’s fourth most populous country, Indonesia views its inclusion in BRICS as a vital means of strengthening the influence of emerging economies and advancing the interests of the Global South.

Brazil, which holds the BRICS presidency in 2025, confirmed that member states approved Indonesia’s entry by consensus during the 2023 Johannesburg summit, a pivotal moment in the bloc’s expansion strategy. However, Indonesia requested to formalize its membership following its presidential election last year. President Prabowo Subianto assumed office in October.

Indonesia shares with the other members of the group support for the reform of global governance institutions and contributes positively to the deepening of cooperation in the Global South,” Brazil’s government stated.
