Peter Obi breaks silence on propose merger talks with opposition ahead of 2027 election
The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has dismissed rumors of a merger with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), or any other political group ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Obi clarified, “No agreement has been established with other parties yet.”
The former Anambra State governor urged Nigerians passionate about the country’s progress to unite in 2027 to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the ruling party of mismanaging national resources.
Highlighting Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation, Obi described the ongoing banditry, terrorism, and kidnappings as “unfortunate,” lamenting the needless loss of lives. He also criticized the high level of corruption, skyrocketing public debt, and wasteful government expenditure, particularly on foreign travels by officials in 2024.
In the 2023 presidential election, APC’s Bola Tinubu emerged victorious, winning 12 states and garnering 8,794,726 votes—nearly two million more than PDP’s Atiku Abubakar, who secured 6,984,520 votes.
Obi, a first-time candidate, made an unprecedented impact with 6,101,533 votes, while NNPP’s Rabiu Kwankwaso claimed fourth place with 1,496,687 votes, dominating Kano State.
