Police refute Amnesty International claims on #Endbadgovernance protests, launch investigation
The Nigeria Police Force has addressed allegations made by Amnesty International in its November 28, 2024, report titled “Bloody August: Nigeria Government’s Violent Crackdown on #EndBadGovernance Protests.”
During a media briefing at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disputed claims in the report, which alleged the killing of 24 protesters in six northern states during the August demonstrations.
According to ACP Adejobi, the Amnesty International claims contradicted police records from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The police documented all incidents of violence during the protests and found no evidence supporting Amnesty International’s allegations.
In response to the report, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) directed an independent investigation. A special panel was constituted to probe the claims, with state Commissioners of Police also tasked to verify allegations within their jurisdictions. The IGP ordered that findings be submitted promptly.
The police pledged continued dialogue with civil society and international organizations to address concerns and uphold human rights. The Inspector-General reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to fair investigations and the preservation of law and order nationwide.
