Just in: House of Representatives mourns stampede victims, calls for safety measures

The House of Representatives has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of lives, including children, in stampedes that occurred at three events in Ibadan, Okija, and Abuja on December 18 and 21, 2024.

The incidents, which claimed multiple lives and left many injured, took place during a funfair at Islamic High School, Basorun, Ibadan, and charity events at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, Abuja, and in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, described the tragedies as deeply unfortunate and called for thorough investigations to prevent future occurrences.

According to a statement by Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., Spokesman, House of Representatives, the Speaker urged caution during upcoming holiday celebrations and prayed for the souls of the deceased.

Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu reaffirmed the House’s commitment to safety, urging collaboration among stakeholders to implement effective crowd management measures at public gatherings. “As we mourn these losses, we must ensure such tragedies are prevented in the future,” he stated.

The House welcomed directives from the Inspector-General of Police, emphasizing the mandatory involvement of security agencies in event planning.

Expressing sympathy for the affected families, House Spokesman Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr. conveyed prayers for the repose of the deceased and speedy recovery for the injured.
