Exclusive: Bring home the gold: Nigerians tip victorious Tobi Amusan to deliver gold athletics final
Nigerians on social media are currently in their joyous mode as world champion Tobi Amusan qualified for the 100-meter hurdles semi-finals in the ongoing 2024 Olympics in Paris on Wednesday.
The Nigerian fast-runner led the pack of eight athletes with 12.49 seconds, followed by America’s Alaysha Johnson with 12.61 and Jamaica’s Janeek Brown qualified with 12.84 seconds.
Rated as one of the favourites for the gold medal, the Nigerian will be competing against other top stars including the Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton, USA’s Alaysha Johnson, world champion Danielle Williams and reigning Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico.
The semi-finals will be held on Friday, August 9, while the final will take place Saturday, August 10.
Reacting to her brilliant performance, Niyi Akindoyin said “All Nigerians are proud of you Tobi, and we are also optimistic that our hope for at least a medal will come through you. We will keep praying for you.”
To Adeniji Tunji Sesan, any medal is fine so far she is on the podium. “250million Nigerians put their hope on your shoulder. Give us this medal. Any colour is ok. May Almighty God be with you.”
Temitope Orubu also expressed the strong support of Nigerians for Amusan, saying, “Tobi, the whole nation is behind you and your God is backing you. Go for gold golden girl.”
