British High Commissioner guarantees safety of Nigerians amidst UK unrest
British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, has met with the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, to address recent concerns over civil unrest in various UK cities.
During the meeting, held in Abuja on Wednesday August 7, 2024, Dr. Montgomery provided an extensive overview of the situation. He confirmed that 12 towns had experienced disorder but emphasizing that the UK government is taking significant measures to restore peace and order.
“We are dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of all our residents, including the Nigerian diaspora,” he stated.
In response to the issues, the UK government has established 60 special courts involving police and legal operatives to expedite the investigation of criminal activities linked to the unrest.
With over 400 arrests made, Dr. Montgomery expressed confidence in the ability of the UK legal system to address the challenges promptly.
Highlighting the multicultural fabric of the UK, the High Commissioner reaffirmed the country’s commitment to diversity: “The United Kingdom is a home to individuals from various backgrounds, and we will continue to welcome qualified persons to live, study, and work here.”
He also committed to tackling hate crimes fueled by online disinformation, declaring, “We will not accept discrimination or attacks against any community.”
Montgomery also provided an encouraging update on the visa situation, revealing that approximately 430,000 visa applications from Nigerians had been approved this year. He advised applicants to navigate the process independently and be wary of agents to avoid potential pitfalls.
Hon. Dabiri-Erewa acknowledged the effective response of the UK government, noting that, so far, no Nigerians have been reported harmed amidst the unrest. NiDCOM remains in close contact with the Nigerian High Commission in London, as well as various diaspora and student groups, ensuring that they are informed and supported during this period.
While applauding the UK’s timely interventions, she reminded Nigerians in the UK of the travel advisories from Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, urging them to remain vigilant and cautious in their surroundings.
The strategic meeting also featured the presence of British Deputy High Commissioner Gill Lever, First Secretary Political Natalie Palmer, and staff members from NiDCOM, emphasizing the collaborative efforts between the UK and Nigeria to ensure the safety and well-being of Nigerians abroad.
