Djibouti to host national workshop on AfCFTA implementation
The Government of Djibouti, in partnership with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), is gearing up to hold a national workshop from July 9 to 11, 2024.
Given Djibouti’s strategic geographic position, regional integration and trade are crucial for its economic growth and resilience.
For Djibouti to fully benefit from these opportunities, a robust implementation strategy is essential. This requires strengthening the country’s ability to trade in line with AfCFTA rules and regulations, along with strong political will, improved institutional skills and infrastructure, stakeholder involvement, and continuous technical skill enhancement.
Djibouti ratified the AfCFTA agreement in May 2022 and has since developed a National Implementation Strategy with support from the ECA.
This strategy includes clear and detailed action plans and capacity-building initiatives for stakeholders from both the public and private sectors.
The workshop is designed to equip the private sector and future members of the National Committee with the essential knowledge and operational aspects of the AfCFTA.
The event aims to enhance the understanding of stakeholders regarding the rules, instruments, procedures, and opportunities related to trade and investment under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
It is also billed to build capacity, provide strategic advice, identify best practices, encourage experience sharing, and propose concrete recommendations for optimal implementation of the AfCFTA in Djibouti.
The AfCFTA promises substantial benefits, including market opening, economic diversification, improved competitiveness, promotion of regional value chains, and attraction of both African and international investments.
