African Union to commemorate 30th anniversary of Rwandan Genocide
The African Union Commission (AUC) through its Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS), in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Rwanda in Ethiopia and Permanent Mission to the African Union and UNECA, is set to organize the 30th Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi in Rwanda, known as Kwibuka30, under the theme “Remember-Unite-Renew”.
The event, scheduled for Sunday, April 7, 2024, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, will take place at the Headquarters of the AUC, Mandela Hall.
The 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda claimed the lives of over one million Rwandan citizens in just one hundred days.
Since April 7, 2010, in line with the decision of the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government, the African Union has been organizing annual commemoration events.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the tragic events, providing an opportunity to honor the deceased, stand in solidarity with survivors, and collectively work towards preventing such atrocities from occurring again.
The annual commemoration aims to raise awareness among African peoples and the international community about the value of life and humanity.
The event will feature a ‘Walk to Remember’ and a high-level event, emphasizing the importance of remembrance, unity, and renewal in the face of adversity.
