Only 10 “minimally functioning” hospitals left in Gaza, says WHO

The World Health Organization warned that Gaza had just 10 “minimally functioning” hospitals to cater for its more than two million people as the war continues in the besieged territory.

The Director General of the UN health body, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, also said around 9,000 patients urgently needed treatment abroad.

The warning is coming at a time when Israeli forces continue their raid on Al-Shifa hospital.

Gaza’s media office says more than 400 people, including patients, war-displaced people, and healthcare staff, have been killed in Israeli attacks during the 13-day siege of the healthcare facility.

Reports also indicate that Israel also denies the World Health Organization access to it.

UN agencies have warned that Gaza is on the verge of famine and called it a man-made crisis because aid trucks are backed up on the Egypt-Gaza border, awaiting long checks by Israeli officials. Israel has denied responsibility.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets of Tel Aviv, denouncing the Benjamin Netanyahu government and demanding an immediate deal for the release of captives.

At least 32,705 Palestinians have been killed and 75,190 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7.

The revised death toll in Israel from Hamas’s October 7 attack stands at 1,139, with dozens still held captive.
