Somalia, China hold talks to strengthen ties in security and anti-terrorism efforts

Abdulqadir Mohamed Noor, Somalia’s Minister of Defense, and FEI Shengchao, the Chinese Ambassador to Somalia, held talks on strategies to enhance security and combat terrorism in the Horn of Africa’s state.
Expressing gratitude for China’s sustained support, Minister Noor highlighted the enduring friendly ties that have historically united the two nations.
He acknowledged China’s contributions to Somalia’s stability and development, emphasizing the importance of international solidarity in these endeavours.
Ambassador FEI Shengchao reciprocated the sentiments, affirming Somalia as a long-standing ally of China. He commended the Somalian government and its citizens for their resolute efforts in promoting stability and advancing the governance process, which aligns with the shared objectives of both countries.
According to officials, this meeting marks a reaffirmation of the mutual commitment to peace and security, setting a precedent for future collaborations between Somalia and China.
Al Shabaab has been waging a violent insurgency against Somalia’s federal government since 2006 in a bid to establish its own rule based on its interpretation of Islamic Sharia law.
Attacks by the group have been repelled by government-backed forces since the mid-2010s. Despite the gains recorded against Al Shabaab, the group still controls vast areas in southern and central Somalia and launches sporadic attacks on civilian and military targets.
