Senator Shehu Sani unveils truth behind soaring cost of food in Nigeria
A former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, revealed the truth behind the sudden rise in the prices of food in Nigeria, saying the sudden jump in cost was artificial and deliberately manipulated by some unpatriotic citizens.
Posting on X, the former lawmaker explained that the gradual collapse in prices of food, as it is now witnessed in some parts of the country, shows that inflation is not to be completely faulted but individuals hiding behind the economic downturn.
Sani said: “The fact that food prices are coming down in some states as reported in the papers shows that the prices are artificially and deliberately manipulated by some unscrupulous individuals hiding behind the inflation.”
Nigeria has been struggling with growing economic challenges which have led to a hike in the prices of food across the country.
The recent price increase was also linked to the hoarding by some marketers and illegal smuggling to neighbouring countries such as Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso among others.
Protests have emerged in different cities over the economic hardship. Protesters are expressing anger and frustration over the growing rate of inflation, driven largely by high food prices and the government’s decision to end a long-running fuel subsidy.
Recall that the African Development Bank recently warned that Nigeria could see social demonstrations caused by rising fuel and food prices in different parts of the country.
It added that other countries, including Kenya, Ethiopia, and Angola, could face a similar situation in its economic forecast.
