Ex-Ghana president faults members of ruling party for economic turmoil
Former President of Ghana John Mahama has faulted members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the raging economic challenges facing the West African country.
He argues that everyone who had a hand in creating the current economic state of affairs in the nation is now attempting to disassociate themselves from the chaos.
John Mahaha said this during a town hall meeting in Tamale as part of his “Building Ghana Tour.”
He said, “All of them they inside, Jack Toronto and all his small brothers are part of the mess that we are going through.
“None of them can escape responsibility, none of them because they have all been a part of this. They all sat in cabinet together, they all took those decisions together. Anytime they were going to borrow from the Eurobond market, they approved it in cabinet.
He added that “They sat in cabinet and approved it. In six years, you went and borrowed 13.5 billion dollars and you did nothing with it so today, you can’t come and tell us you are not part of it,” he said.
He promised that if the NDC wins the general elections in 2024, its administration will try to revive the economy.
“They must go home and learn their lessons. NDC is coming back by winning this election and we have the men and women that are going to restore this country’s economy and finances to a healthy condition,” he said.
Ghana has been struggling with its biggest economic crisis in a decade, which came amid soaring public debt-servicing costs.
In 2023, the oil, cocoa, and gold producers secured a bailout program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) worth $3 billion as part of efforts to ease the raging economic troubles.
The forthcoming presidential election in Ghana is expected to be a tight race as candidates are expected to campaign along socio-economic lines to drive support ahead of the poll by the end of 2024.
