Gaza: European Parliament votes on ceasefire as Arab nations push to end Israel’s attacks
The European Parliament has voted in favour of a ceasefire resolution in the Gaza Strip and to accelerate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the territory.
With 312 votes in favor, 131 against, and 72 abstentions, the resolution—which is simply symbolic and has no legal significance—was passed by the parliament.
Despite requests from members like Belgium, Ireland, and Spain, the 27 leaders of the union have not yet reached a consensus to demand a ceasefire. Their official narrative continues to centre on “humanitarian pauses and corridors” as of now.
In the meantime, Arab states have reached out to the US and European governments on a plan to end Israel’s attack on Gaza and achieve lasting peace, suggesting the creation of an independent Palestinian state in exchange for the normalisation of relations.
Aljazeera quoted The Financial Times reports that the “senior Arab official” reports the proposal to include Saudi Arabia normalising ties with Israel and Palestine being given full membership at the United Nations.
The plan by the Arab states is expected to be presented to the international community in a few weeks.
