AFCON: AlHassan Yusuf of Royal Antwerp replaces injured Ndidi
The Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, has announced that Royal Antwerp of Belgium star Alhassan Yusuf would replace Wilfred Ndidi in the Super Eagles squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
AlHassan is in the Super Eagles line-up for the first time due to an emergency change.
He’s replacing Ndidi who suffered an injury ahead of Leicester City’s 4-1 win against Huddersfield Town on New Year’s Day.
The 26-year-old midfielder who has featured for Nigeria at two AFCON finals will now miss out on the opportunity to make it a third on a stretch.
His teammate, Kelechi Iheanacho is expected to join the team before the competition commences despite his injury worries.
With the latest development, AlHassan Yusuf will now join his teammates at their Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, camp.
The 2023 AFCON, which will be decided in Ivory Coast, will run from January 13 to February 11, 2024.
The Super Eagles are drawn in Group A with hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau.
